Schedules and prices

The Palais des Papes is open every day, all year round. The last admission to the ticket offices is 1 hour before the monument closes and 30 minutes for the visit to the pontifical gardens. Online reservation is recommended. 

The monument is freely accessible every Sunday and the gardens every day for residents of Avignon (proof required). 

Getting to the Palace

  • By foot: the monument is accessible in a maximum of 20 minutes, no matter where you are within the walls.
  • By bike : The monument – ​​located on the ViaRhôna route – has obtained the Accueil Vélo brand. Cycling visitors, who benefit from numerous specific and free services during their stay, are welcome!

Different ways to visit the monument

Several options are available to you for visiting the monument.  

Individual visits:

Salone, as a couple or as a family, the classic route is done using a digital tablet, theHistopad, offered free of charge included in the admission price and available in 7 languages ​​(FR, GB, D, JP, SP, CH, IT). Thanks to augmented reality you will be able to visualize a large part of the rooms of the Palais des Papes as they might have been in the XNUMXth century.

The gardens of the Papal Palace:

The gardens of the Popes’ Palace are accessible through the Maria Casarès courtyard and can be visited independently of the monument. They are free every day for Avignon residents (upon presentation of proof of address) 

Note : The gardens of the Palais des Papes close to visitors 30 minutes before the monument closes. Your Histopad does not contain information on this part of the route.

Good to know

The Palais des Papes is neither air-conditioned nor heated. We advise you to adapt your equipment during periods of extreme heat or in the heart of winter in order to enjoy the visit to the monument in the best conditions. Thank you for understanding.

Comfort throughout your visit

Rest areas intended for people who feel the need to stop, mark the route and allow you to enjoy a seated break. 

NEW ! The comfort route 

Due to a large number of steps, the classic tour route of the Palais des Papes is partially inaccessible to people in wheelchairs. However, solutions exist! Our teams are mobilized to support you and provide you with a “tailor-made” experience. Your route will take you through the main spaces of the monument and will allow you to discover the history of the popes.
 
The course is accessible by reservation only – reservation is possible up to 24 hours before the slot – on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays from 14 p.m. to 16 p.m.
Duration of the visit: 2h

Animals in the monument

Domestic animals, even if kept on a leash or carried in bags, are prohibited in themonument enclosure with the exception of guide or assistance dogs. 

Photos at the Palais des Papes

Photos are allowed in all rooms of the Palace except in the painted rooms in order to preserve them: Pope's Room, Deer's Room, Saint Jean Chapel.

This mark is awarded only to tourism professionals whose quality approach is recognized according to rigorous criteria conducted by the Tourism Quality Plan and regularly subject to independent monitoring of their services.

Our commitments

The Palais des Papes is committed to the environment as part of its CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) approach:

  • We invite our visitors to sort their waste using the bins provided:
    • Yellow bins for recycling plastic and cardboard packaging, cans and bottles (except glass), brochures.
    • Black bins for other waste.
    • Glass containers should be placed in the City’s recycling bins: Waste collection sectors
  • The visiting rooms are equipped with low-energy lighting
  • We select our cleaning and hygiene products by favoring eco-responsible solutions, such as:
    • Products certified by recognized ecological labels
    • Ultra-concentrated formulas to reduce packaging
    • Containers made from recycled materials
