From March 1 to November 1: 9 a.m. to 19 p.m.
January 1 – December 31, 2026
An invitation to discover the Palace of the Popes and the life that was led there in the XNUMXth century through a guided tour.
This imposing monument, classified as a UNESCO world heritage site, a marvel of Gothic art, has inspired numerous writers including Henry James, Prosper Mérimée, Alphonse Daudet, Charles Dickens and many others.
Beyond the "Grand History," you will discuss with your guide the organization of the "Pope's Hotel" and the food services. What types of dishes were favored? Where did the ingredients come from? How were attempts to poison the Pope thwarted?
Do you know why the Pope worked under the watchful eye of a stag painted on the walls of his study? Why does the lion occupy a special place in the sculpted decoration of the Palace? What is the meaning of the monkey looking at itself in a mirror at the exit of the Great Chapel?
You can't guess? Your guide knows and will share it with you!
