When observing the Palace of the Popes, one detail stands out: its very thick walls and imposing towers.
And for good reason! The palace was both a papal residence and a fortress.
In the 14th century, the popes based in Avignon had to protect their power in a turbulent Europe.
A CLOSER LOOK AT… The Great Chapel 🔍
At 52 meters long, it is one of the largest rooms in the Palace… and one of the most impressive.
Built in the 14th century during the pontificate of Clement VI, it was at the heart of papal life. Major religious festivals, important ceremonies, and significant moments of the papal court were celebrated there.
Its exceptional dimensions also allowed for the amplification of liturgical chants, making this place a unique space for the sacred music of the time.
And what impressed you most when you entered?
Today is World Theatre Day 🎭 and we are just a few months away from the start of the 80th edition of the Avignon Festival 🤩
DID YOU KNOW ❔
Founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, the Avignon Festival is today one of the most important international events of contemporary live performance.
The Cour d'honneur of the Palais des Papes is its birthplace!
Today, the Festival takes place in many locations: cloisters, chapels, gardens, quarries, gymnasiums… and welcomes nearly 120,000 spectators each year and offers more than 400 events (shows, readings, debates, meetings)!
See you on July 4!

As part of the 5th edition of Passe-Murailles, the Palais des Papes opens the doors of the Notaries' room.
Conservation-restoration students from ESAA are working live on a model representing the Palace as it was in 1450 — built at the end of the 19th century by an infantry captain.
Come and watch them work, ask your questions, and discover what goes on behind the scenes in a conservation-restoration training program. Visits are available Monday to Friday from 14 pm to 18 pm, until March 13th.
Once restored, the model will remain in the Notaries' room as an educational tool for workshops for young audiences.

At the Palais des Papes, the decorations never cease to amaze us!
Throughout the month, a photographic campaign is being conducted in the painted rooms of the monument as part of the "Palais des Papes, Pont d'Avignon and Biodiversity" project (2024-2029) supported by the Endowment Fund of the Palais des Papes and the Pont d'Avignon.
Photographer Fabrice Lepeltier captures the smallest details of the birds, insects, and species depicted in 14th-century paintings. This work, carried out in collaboration with the LPO PACA (French League for the Protection of Birds - Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region) and historians, aims to better understand the link between medieval art and the observation of living things.
🎯 Objectives:
• precisely identify the species represented
• to create a database on these decorations
• imagine future visitor routes and educational tools focusing on the dialogue between heritage and biodiversity
This project, financed by the Endowment Fund with the support of the L'OCCITANE Fund, marks a new step in the enhancement of the Palais des Papes.
Another way to look at this iconic monument… and discover the nature hidden within its walls 🌿
